Whether you’re a music nut, a film fanatic, or a beach bum, Jacmel, Haiti, is the place to go. The city became a tourist retreat in 1980, and even though tourism dropped off after the 1990s and 2000s due to things like the 2010 earthquake, Jacmel has since been rebuilt and thrives as the cultural capital of Haiti. Plus, that makes it the perfect getaway for someone who wants to take a trip into a world that’s a little less avant-garde.

Helping Haiti

In Haiti, a 6-year-old orphaned girl named Jenika dreams of becoming a doctor. Ken Agle, founder of the public charity Pathways to English, met her a year ago when she first entered the Corner of Heaven Orphanage in St. Marc. When he talks to her he “believes everything she says because she has integrity.” Ken remarks, “If you asked me a year ago if it was possible for an orphan to ever become a doctor, I would have said no . . . now she has a great chance.”

When someone says the name of a famous place, an image floats to the foreground of the mind—a hazy, incomplete portrait of what makes that place important.
