Major and Minor Utah Venues

April 29, 2020 12:00 AM
Go to concerts, the movies say. They’re youthful and fun.But you go to BYU and live in Provo.“Where?!” you scream into the void. “I don’t know any venues!”The movies say nothing. They just laugh in your face, cold and unfeeling. Okay, maybe it’s not quite like that. But it feels pretty similar sometimes. Music is very much a part of our lives; just ask any college admissions essay. That’s why I think it’s worth listening to live music—it hits different than studio recordings. But it’s hard to know where to start in a place like Utah county, especially if you’re moving in from elsewhere (like me!).For a long time, the only interesting music-thing I knew about Utah county was that there’s the Rooftop Concert series that Provo puts on every year. Then it got canceled, and I (along with many others) thought, “Well. What now?”

Jacmel: The City of Light

June 15, 0019 12:00 AM
Whether you’re a music nut, a film fanatic, or a beach bum, Jacmel, Haiti, is the place to go. The city became a tourist retreat in 1980, and even though tourism dropped off after the 1990s and 2000s due to things like the 2010 earthquake, Jacmel has since been rebuilt and thrives as the cultural capital of Haiti. Plus, that makes it the perfect getaway for someone who wants to take a trip into a world that’s a little less avant-garde.

All Shook Up over Death Week: The Wacky and Wonderful Ways Memphis Remembers its King

April 04, 0018 12:00 AM
Memphis, Tennessee, is, without a doubt, home to the legacy of a royal. Not a crown-wearer, but a blue-suede-shoes-wearer. Elvis Aaron Presley passed away on August 16,1977, but has continued to leave his mark on the greater Memphis area in the 40 years since. His influence on Memphis, the city nestled right next to the delta of the Mississippi River, is unmistakable. From souvenir trinkets to restaurant menus, Elvis’s name and image are everywhere.

The Beatin’ Path

October 01, 0016 12:00 AM
Some say that music has the power to move the soul. But in a more literal sense, music can move its listeners great distances—just consider the flocks of fans who travel many miles to see their favorite music artists. The stats don’t lie: according to Billboard, thirty-two million people attend at least one music festival yearly and travel an average of 903 miles to do so.

The Hills Are Alive with the Sounds of Austria

December 11, 0013 12:00 AM
Driving through the misty Austrian mountains to the small village of Hallstatt was a highlight of Arizona resident Daniel Ostler’s memorable high school choir trip to Austria. Ostler recalls the scene as his choir sang “Ave Maria” in an open amphitheater facing the magnificent green landscape: “I remember how the fog rose as we started to sing. It was so beautiful. It was early in the morning, and people who lived in the village started coming out of their houses to thank us.”

Recycled Rhapsody: A Landfill Orchestra

August 30, 0013 12:00 AM
Cateura, one of the poorest cities in Paraguay, is ruled by its enormous landfill. Nearly everyone who calls this small town home works at the landfill and lives in a shack made from corrugated metal and scrap wood that were found among the garbage. Over the years, ton after ton of solid waste flowed down from the capital city, Asunción, to the landfill here in Cateura. Because the people had no place to dispose of their own garbage, the trash piled high in the city and filled the lagoon, leaving the land and the water polluted and unsanitary.

March 13, 0011 12:00 AM
“Keep Austin Weird” is an unofficial slogan for Austin, Texas—and the locals take it very seriously. The city prides itself on its eclectic, creative atmosphere that fosters small businesses and supports artists, musicians, music festivals, and pretty much anything independent.
