Taking on Thailand

Taking on Thailand

With a month in Thailand, you’re not just traveling—you’re diving headfirst into vibrant cities, stunning beaches, rich traditions, and unforgettable cuisine. Thailand is a country where every region feels like a new adventure, and you can experience a wide range of culture, nature, and local life with just a little planning.

Start in Bangkok

Bangkok is Thailand’s bustling capital and a perfect place to begin your journey. The city is famous for its shopping, so whether you’re wandering through mega-malls like MBK Center or Chatuchak Weekend Market, you’ll find everything from trendy clothes to cheap technology. Prices are generally low, but additional bargaining is still expected—it’s less about saving a few baht (Thai currency) and more about joining in a long-standing local tradition.

Add a visit to a floating market to your itinerary—another must-do in Bangkok. These colorful waterways are filled with boats selling fruit, souvenirs, and hot meals, but do your research before you go. Some tours are overpriced or overly touristy or both, so it’s worth looking for a reputable company to take you afloat.

Of course, no trip to Bangkok is complete without visiting the city’s Buddhist temples, also known as wats. Two of the most well-known are Wat Pho, home to the famous reclining Buddha, and Wat Arun, with its dazzling riverside views. Remember to dress modestly (clothing covering your knees and your shoulders) and remove your shoes when visiting wats.

Island Hopping

After experiencing Bangkok’s buzz, head south for some island time. Phuket is one of Thailand’s most popular beach destinations, offering white sands, turquoise water, and a lively nightlife scene.

From here, it’s easy to hop over to the Phi Phi Islands. A boat or snorkeling tour around the neighboring islands is sure to be a memorable experience, giving you the opportunity to swim through crystal-clear waters and see colorful marine life.

Krabi, a province on the mainland of southern Thailand, is equally breathtaking with its dramatic limestone cliffs and laid-back vibe. It’s a great place to slow down, relax, and enjoy Thailand’s natural beauty.

Head Up to Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, offers a completely different experience. This city is known for its traditional culture and beautiful mountain landscapes.

Sign up for a cooking class and discover the heart of Thai cuisine one dish at a time. This food is fresh, flavorful, and surprisingly simple to prepare once you’ve learned the basics. And who wouldn’t want to take a book full of Thai recipes home with them?

Another highlight of Chiang Mai is spending time with elephants. Many sanctuaries now allow visitors to feed, bathe, and walk with these gentle giants. Some sanctuaries force elephants to carry tourists all day with little to no rest, so put in the work to visit an ethical sanctuary that focuses on the care and conservation of these magnificent beasts. You’ll still get some amazing pictures and unforgettable memories.

The city also comes alive at night with bustling night markets, where you can shop, snack, and savor the atmosphere. You might even feel adventurous enough to give a scorpion lollipop a try.

Getting Around and Staying Safe

Transportation in Thailand is easy and inexpensive. Tuk-tuks (motorized rickshaws) are a fun way to travel short distances, though make sure to agree on a price before hopping in. For longer trips, ride-hailing apps like Grab (the regional equivalent of Uber) are convenient and affordable.

As for safety, one key rule is to never drink the tap water in Thailand. Always buy bottled water or soda from sealed bottles to avoid having stomach issues. Another quick safety tip is to be sure to keep your bag zipped in crowded spots to avoid being pickpocketed. Thailand’s friendly energy makes it easy to relax, but taking a few small precautions will help keep your trip worry-free.

However long you get to stay in this beautiful country, you’re sure to eat some amazing food, meet some incredible people, and see some awe-inspiring sights. Make sure to take lots of pictures and savor every moment!
