Golden Adventures

Are you a couple seeking adventure? Two couples in their seventies share their best tips and tricks for traveling comfortably at any age.

Ocean Cruises

Laurel and Jay Arnoldus say cruises are the most relaxing form of travel. When preparing for this trip, they recommend buying cruise packages that include meals, lodging, and—if you’re lucky—flights. The Arnolduses have found that some cruises in other countries include the flight cost in their package.

Some cruises give land tours that cost extra, but most of these tours will provide transportation around destinations as well as food for the excursion. They also offer slower tours for those in wheelchairs or those who would rather enjoy a leisurely walk.

River Cruise

Similar to ocean cruises, river cruises take people to different countries through inland rivers. Some cruise packages include river tours, though they are admittedly more expensive.

Sometimes, the Arnolduses prefer river cruises to ocean cruises, due to special perks. River cruises can start an excursion in the middle of a city, allowing tourists to explore with less travel time.

River cruises also have fewer passengers, allowing tourists to enjoy a more relaxing trip. With fewer people on these cruises, the Arnolduses say they are pampered a lot more.

Flying

Another couple, Dale and Susan Wright, recommend flying as a way to travel. Depending on where you go, they say to plan at least three months in advance. After all, the best prices come with the most planning.

If you require medical equipment on your travels, most airports allow you to take it for free or as a carry-on. For example, the Wrights brought a CPAP machine with them on every flight without problems. When bringing medical equipment, you must also provide documentation of your medical condition and of your need for the equipment.

If you require mobility assistance, many airline employees will be happy to assist you. Requesting assistance when you make the flight reservation is encouraged.

Motorhomes

The Wrights also love the option of using a motor home as a flexible way to travel. Motor homes allow this couple to go almost anywhere and spend as much time as they want in any given area. They find that motor homes allow them to enjoy the moment while they are touring the beautiful countryside.

For the best experience, they also recommend preparing food ahead of time. The Wrights prepare meals that lay flat so they can fit more food in the freezer.

Transportation Abroad

When traveling in big cities, especially outside the United States, the Arnolduses say that many countries allow tourists to buy what is sometimes called a travel card. These travel cards give access to all transportation platforms: buses, trains, trams, and more.

However, if you want to rent a car but are 75 or older, you might consider bringing a younger chauffeur. Rental car companies often require those over 75 to pay extra and provide a doctor’s note proving they are healthy enough to drive.

Adventure is out there!

So, if you are itching to see the world, pick one of these travel methods and try it out for yourself! These have been special experiences for each of these couples, and without a doubt, they will be for you too.
