Splitboarding: Going Beyond the Lift Lines

Cross country ski into the unknown and snowboard back out on this one-of-a-kind gear made for the snow adventurer in you.

Have you ever felt that itch to get just a little more out of the way? Are you looking for a snowboarding experience away from the hustle and bustle of groomed trails? Then splitboards are just the thing for you.

What It Is

Splitboards combine the roughing-it vibes and expanded terrain of touring with the speed and technique of snowboarding. What initially appears to be a traditional snowboard actually splits into two trekking skis with adjustable bindings. Each board comes with poles and skins you can attach to the bottom of your skis for traction as you hike to seldom-seen spots and then enjoy a thrilling snowboard run back down.

Where to Go

If you’re here in Utah, Mt. Timpanogos and Box Elder Peak have various trails that are perfect for testing your bravery and sense of adventure.

You’ll find other epic spots throughout the country, like the Cooley-Jericho Glade and Sherburne Ski Trail in New Hampshire or the Berthoud Pass in Colorado. And for the real diehards, you can even book guided trips through the best snow in Alaska, California, and Washington.

Staying Safe

The thrill of splitboarding can wear away quickly if you get into a tough spot. Always prioritize safety and follow these general guidelines on your backcountry adventures:

  • Bring a buddy
  • Keep your phone on you
  • Research trails and routes before you go
  • Pack essential gear like a probe, a shovel, snacks, extra layers, etc.

Wherever you go, splitboarding gives you a chance to experience nature’s beautiful snow and mountains in a way you never have before—so let’s get shredding!
