Letter from the Editor

Honeysuckle. That was all I could smell as I strolled through the backwoods of northern Alabama. I took in the faint smell that left an even fainter taste in my mouth. Something about the copacetic atmosphere filled me with perspective and appreciation for the natural earth. I breathed in the scent and experienced a world of whimsy, a world of romance, a world of serenity.

Homeward Bound

April 23, 0019 12:00 AM
If you had asked me when I was younger what my favorite place in the world was, I would have told you Rock Mill Park. It was a small park no more than three miles from my house with a quaint pavilion and cement trails that wound through the woods. It was somewhere I could go alone, and I went there often—to read, to bike, to run. That little park was easily my favorite place in the world. Back then, my world was pretty small.

The Telephone Pole on Lombard Street

October 06, 0013 12:00 AM
I grew up in a tourist trap, surrounded on every side by meccas for the traveler. From the front door of my childhood home, you can drive 40 minutes in any direction and end up in one of America’s must-see locations: the Golden Gate Bridge, the vineyards of Napa Valley, Redwood National Park, California’s state capitol, and the Jelly Belly factory. Even though these landmarks were a part of my backyard, they never lost their appeal.

I’m a bag lady.

February 28, 0012 12:00 AM
My mom will tell you that I’m a bag lady. I have a weakness for bags of all sizes, colors, shapes, and functions, and I hoard them shamelessly. In a single day, I might use three or four different bags.
