Tales from the Trip: Spring 2015
The Mountain and the Suitcase Growing up in Texas doesn’t give you a lot of experience with hiking enormous mountains, but my brother Jeremy and I were excited to hike Utah’s Mount Timpanogos (11,752 feet) one night in mid-October 2007. Hiking with us was a guy named Jeff, whose climbing pack was actually a rolling suitcase.

2012 Essay Contest Winners
Cinderella's CastleRead four travel tales from our talented Stowaway contest winners. The Ever-Eccentric Matt I should have known that who you take to an amusement park can make or break your day. I learned this lesson when three friends and I went to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. We decided to visit Magic Kingdom to see the Main Street Electrical Parade.

A Royal Treat in Chantilly
Every tourist visits Versailles while in France, but my friend and I—two crazy girls armed with backpacks and French dictionaries—were not “every tourist.” Wanting a more magical and authentic French adventure, we caught a train to a place a local recommended: Chantilly, home of horse racing and birthplace of whipped cream. (Yes, crème chantilly is French for whipped cream.)

Swearing at King Arthur
According to the weatherman, I was experiencing gale-force winds and heavy sleet as I struggled to get to the top of Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh, Scotland. The hike might not normally appear that strenuous, but under these conditions, I was resisting the urge to just quit and hightail it back to shelter and hot chocolate. Considering I had already made fun of the four other girls I was with for not being able to handle the hike, I figured I should finish what I started: I persevered and conquered the mountain.

Mis-Adventure: Plans Subject to Change
Lyndsay Steinmetz has studied at Oxford, been in Rome during Holy Week, and taken a 33-hour bus ride from Warsaw, Poland, to London, England. No, the bus ride was not on her bucket list. It wasn’t the cheapest way to travel either. That bus ride could only be described as Lyndsay’s desperate attempt to find a paddle upstream—while fleeing from a volcano.
