The City Less Traveled

Looking for a less-known travelling spot with scenic hikes and breathtaking views? We’ve got just the place.

Oregon is well-known for its largest city, Portland. Visitors from all over come to explore this bustling city. However, if you’re looking for a quiet place away from the crowd, look no further than Sandy, Oregon.

This city, though largely unknown to many, is a sweet spot for skiers and a favorite among locals. With a small highway that goes right through the city and straight up the mountain, it’s no wonder that its nickname is the “Gateway to Mount Hood.”

Despite its name, Sandy has everything but sand. Deep green forests, a winding river, a commanding mountain, and rolling valleys envelop the city. Stop by Jonsrud Viewpoint for a breathtaking view of Mt. Hood. There’s no cost to take in this priceless view.

If you’re in a mood for a beautiful hike or jog, head down to the Sandy River Trail. Several paths give runners, hikers, and strolling families options for difficulty levels. Each forest-shrouded path leads down to the Sandy River, where locals often go fly fishing and hikers sit on the rocks nearby to watch the rushing river. Whether you’re looking for a hardcore run or taking your young kids for a walk, be sure to head over during the summer (and eat some wild blackberries on the way!).

With ski shops all over, breathtaking views in every direction, and the quiet tranquility of a small town in the middle of nowhere, Sandy may just make it onto your “places to visit” list—just make sure to bring an umbrella.
