Right to Roam: Enjoying Sweden’s Landscapes

April 03, 0018 12:00 AM
“The freedom to roam is the principle, protected by the law, that gives all people the right to roam free in nature. Sleep on mountaintops, by the lakes, in quiet forests or beautiful meadows. Take a kayak out for a spin or experience the wildlife firsthand. Pick berries and mushrooms and flowers from the ground – all completely free of charge. The only thing you have to pay, is respect for nature and the animals living there.” —Visit Sweden

The Flexible Traveler

April 01, 0018 12:00 AM
If there’s anything I learned from studying abroad last year, it’s that planning and preparing for any kind of travel is good, but ultimately, flexibility will be your best friend. The most notable time that my friends and I were taught this lesson was on a bitterly cold day in Munich, Germany. We had devised a strategy to catch a train to Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, later take a different train back to Munich, and then ride to Vienna that evening. Despite the chill, we were all excited for the day’s coming events.

5 Easter Traditions from Around the World

March 28, 0018 12:00 AM
You probably know Easter as the Christian commemoration of Jesus’s resurrection, a celebration of the spring equinox, and an occasion to eat chocolate eggs and jelly beans from the Easter Bunny. But if you’re traveling to another country this spring, you might be surprised at the variety of ways people celebrate Easter.

Breaking the Spring Break Stereotype

March 22, 0018 12:00 AM
After a long and dreary winter, a change of the seasons is upon us. Snow is beginning to melt on the mountains and flowers are starting to bloom. Spring is on the horizon, which can only mean one thing: spring break.

Biking Around Hilton Head Island

March 18, 0018 12:00 AM
I sometimes come to the end of a vacation thinking, “That was a fantastic trip, but I’m ready to go home.” Maybe I’m picky, but few places have made me want to stay there longer. But I can confidently say that I have never left Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, without wanting to stay longer. However, my stays on the island are not complete without a bike.

Howth: An Irish Seaside Town

March 12, 0018 12:00 AM
While studying in London, I visited Ireland for a weekend along with a small group of friends. None of us had been there before, and by our last day in Ireland, we had run out of touristy things to do. We asked an employee at the National Leprechaun Museum in Dublin for ideas, and he gave us a veritable pot of gold of options. We took his suggestion to travel to Howth, a small fishing town on Ireland’s east coast.

Beautiful Bruges

March 08, 0018 12:00 AM
Most visitors to Belgium tour its capital, Brussels. But Bruges, just an hour away from Brussels, is Belgium’s hidden jewel. Bruges is a city of wonderfully preserved medieval houses and picturesque canals. While the official language of Bruges is Flemish, many of its occupants speak English well and are very friendly to tourists. During your visit to Bruges, a boat tour is the best way to see the city. Bruges is riddled with canals, and drifting through tranquil waters is a wonderful way to spend the afternoon. The river guides are incredibly informative, and you will learn a lot about the history of Bruges. The waters are lovely, but Bruges does tend to be cold—don’t forget to bring a jacket.

The Traditional Temples of Taiwan

February 28, 0018 12:00 AM
Above the entrance of Taizhong City’s Lecheng Temple, there hangs a blessing on painted lanterns: “The wind harmonious, the rain soothful—the country prosperous, the people peaceful.” This blessing greets the thousands of visitors who come to the temple to worship Mazu—a goddess who protects sea travelers and fishermen, as well as being an important figure in the traditional folk religion of southern China’s coastal areas. The Lecheng Temple, constructed in 1791, is one of the oldest temples in central Taiwan—with parts of the temple shimmering in Qing Dynasty architecture.

So Much to Do in El Salvador

February 21, 0018 12:00 AM
We choose the places we travel to according to a variety of interests―relaxation, culture, food, aesthetic natural phenomenon, history, or maybe just bragging rights―but for most of us, such expeditions must always come with another concern: expense. One little Central American country, however, comes with an attractive mix of tourist-satisfying experiences as well as a modest price tag―El Salvador, the smallest but most densely populated country in Central America. For the travel-savvy tourist, El Salvador offers beautiful rural countrysides and a comparatively safe and stress-fee Central American experience. Yes, you’ve probably heard about the safety concerns, and yes, crime rates in El Salvador are high, but almost all of these dangerous altercations relate to gang activity connected to the drug trade. Tourists who practice safety precautions, such as not walking around at night, avoiding bad neighborhoods, and keeping their valuables hidden, should be fine.

The Ghost Warrior of Sutton Hoo

February 14, 0018 12:00 AM
The treasures of Sutton Hoo might never have been uncovered without the help of a ghost. In early nineteenth-century Suffolk, England, the widow Mrs. Edith Pretty maintained an estate where many ancient burial mounds were located. Because burial mounds in the area had a history of being pillaged and robbed, she did not have any reason to search the mounds on her property. Then a series of events took place. Legend has it that an ancient warrior appeared to her in a vivid dream and plunged his sword into one of the mounds. Pretty’s friend also saw ghostly figures of warriors on top of the mound.

Circumnavigating Taiwan

February 12, 0018 12:00 AM
The island of Taiwan boasts a high-speed rail network and stately, drivable highways. Though these systems provide rapid and comfortable channels for many travelers, the more daring adventurer may want a richer, more intimate experience with the island’s charming vistas, vivid smells, and strong culture. Those who seek an adventure need only to travel around the island by bicycle. On these “Round-the-Island” tours, cyclists cruise through greenswards of rice, rolling mango orchards, and narrow, misty canyons.

When People Become Living Art: Laguna Beach’s Pageant of the Masters

February 07, 0018 12:00 AM
When someone mentions Laguna Beach, my mind immediately conjures up images of sandy beaches and California surfers. But something many people may not know about Laguna Beach—something that I did not know—is that it also has a thriving artist community, one with annual large events like the Pageant of the Masters that captivate the attention of thousands.
