The Annual Salt Lake City Greek Festival is a joyous celebration of culture expressed through dance, cuisine, and art. As the largest Greek festival west of the Mississippi, it gathers Greek communities from far and wide. Dancers of all ages perform traditional Greek folk dances on an outdoor stage while artisans display their Hellenic artwork inside.
Like in most communities, food is at the heart of Greek life, so be sure to arrive on an empty stomach! Gyros (pita bread with meat, vegetables, and tzatziki sauce), Dolmathes (stuffed grape leaves), and Pastichio (Greek lasagna) are just a few of the main dishes you can try, as well as sides such as fresh feta cheese, Kalamata olives, and grilled meat sticks. You’ll want to save room for some Greek dessert. At the festival you’ll find cookies (Amigthalota, Kourambiethes, and Melomakarona) and pastries (Baklava, Kataifi, and the more savory Spanakopita). If you don’t recognize any of those names, don’t worry! Everyone in attendance is happy to explain what the foods are and share their beloved culture with you.
Located next to the Holy Trinity Cathedral in downtown Salt Lake City, the Greek Festival gives attendees the opportunity to explore the beautiful art within its walls. Tours of the Cathedral are also available for those who wish to learn more about the history of the Greek Orthodox tradition.
This September will mark the 46th annual Greek Festival in Salt Lake City. So, why not go and support a great cause, eat good food, and make new friends?
