Though traveling demands a proactive approach and extra diligence for those with allergies, it’s possible for them to explore the world safely.

Be Prepared

  1. Research Destination Cuisine
    1. Investigate local cuisine and common allergens in the region you’re visiting.
    2. Be cautious about street food.
  2. Inform Airlines and Accommodations
    1. Notify your airline and accommodations about your food allergies when booking.
    2. Request special meals on flights that cater to your dietary needs.
  3. Choose Allergy-Friendly Accommodations:
    1. Book your stay at places that are knowledgeable about food allergies and can accommodate your dietary restrictions.
    2. Communicate your allergies to hotel staff in advance.
  4. Check Restaurant Reviews
    1. Utilize online platforms to read reviews from travelers with food allergies.
    2. Identify restaurants with a reputation for accommodating dietary restrictions.
    3. Inquire about food preparation methods and cross-contamination procedures.
  5. Bring Allergy Supplies
    1. Consider wearing a medical alert bracelet that specifies your food allergies and emergency contact information. This can be especially helpful in case of an emergency.
    2. Packing an allergy travel kit is indispensable. This kit should include essentials like antihistamines, an epinephrine auto-injector (if prescribed), and a detailed list of allergens in multiple languages.
  6. Communicate Clearly
    1. Carry allergy translation cards in the local language that clearly state your food allergies. Provide these cards to restaurant staff to convey your dietary restrictions.
    2. Learn basic phrases related to food allergies in the local language.
    3. Informing travel companions about allergies and emergency procedures is equally important for added safety.
  7. Pack Safe Snacks
    1. Pack a supply of snacks to have on hand in case suitable options are not readily available.
    2. Consider nonperishable items like granola bars, nuts, or dried fruit.
  8. Utilize Allergy Apps:
    1. Use apps, such as AllergyEats or Fig, that provide information on allergy-friendly restaurants and food options in the area.
    2. Stay informed about any recent reviews or updates to the apps you use.
