Sailing Back to World War II

August 27, 0012 12:00 AM
It’s 1946, and you are in the icy waters of the Davis Straits off of Greenland. You are a sailor in the middle of Operation Frostbite, and this is your first deployment. Your task is to make sure the machinery in the engine room keeps functioning, despite the freezing cold. Even though you are only 19 years old, failing in your duties would be detrimental to the ship and its crew.

For a guy like Stan Ellsworth, motorcycles rather than cars are clearly the way to travel.

Curry: The Eurasian History

June 05, 0012 12:00 AM
Many Japanese foods that are popular today both in Japan and throughout the world didn’t actually originate in Japan. Gyoza (potstickers) and yakisoba (similar to Chinese chow mein) both originated in China. And tonkatsu (Japanese pork cutlet) is a Western dish adapted by the Japanese.

From Wright Brothers to Wi-Fi

June 05, 0012 12:00 AM
From the time Orville and Wilbur Wright left the ground for a mere five minutes in 1903, flying has mesmerized people around the world. And it’s understandable. Who doesn’t want to soar over snowcapped vistas, view the world’s remote islands from above, or travel to and from Europe in record times?

Roseberry: Idaho's Little Finland

December 05, 0010 12:00 AM
Your first impression of Frank Eld would probably underestimate him. He’s middle-aged and has graying hair, and his beard reaches his chest. He usually wears suspenders with a flannel shirt and is almost always wearing a hat. He looks like any other country farmer. But if you catch a glimpse of his blue eyes behind those spectacles, twinkling just a bit, you may think twice about who this man really is.

Must-See Museum Exhibits

December 05, 0010 12:00 AM
In addition to permanent collections, most museums have special temporary exhibits that showcase one particular subject. These can be anything from a display about the U.S. Postal System during World War II to blown and sculpted glass. You have to pay attention though, because these special exhibits are sometimes open for as short as a few months. Here are some exhibits that are currently on display that you won’t want to miss.
